Full time mother, with full time job, looking to go back to school ( college) to get degree?
MS.B asked:
I would like to go back to school to study nursing. I work full time, and have a six year old in first grade. Does anyone know of any school or place that has a nursing program (LVN,LPN,RN) that I can study part time. I live in Queens, I have a car and dont mind traveling. Anything besides CUNY. Also any advice on returning back to school after so many years. I graduated highschool in 1997. I am really nervous that I will be the oldest in my classes. Thanks

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED AT THE DIFFERENT AGES OF NURSING STUDENTS. I WAS 35 YEARS OLD WHEN I GRADUATED AND NOT THE OLDEST IN MY CLASS. SOME OF THE YOUNGER FOLKS THAT WENT INTO THE PROGRAM RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL DID NOT MAKE IT IN THE PROGRAM AND SOME THAT DID MAKE IT DID NOT PASS THEIR STATE BOARDS. I WORKED 3RD SHIFT ,WENT TO SCHOOL AND HAD 3 BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS. I GOT VERY TRIED AT TIMES BUT IT WAS ALL SO WORTH IT. DON’T GIVE UP YOUR PLAN BECAUSE IT CAN BE DONE. CALL YOUR LOCAL COLLEGE AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER. THE VERY BEST OF LUCK TO YOU.

Look for an adult accelerated degree program. They’re geared toward you! Many have classes that can be taken online or in the evenings and since they’re for adults, you won’t be the oldest in your class.
Additionally for nursing, ask at a couple of local hospitals. Especially in NY, many hospitals will pay you to go to nursing school part time in return for a 2 or 3 year contract with the hospital. A guaranteed job and the hospital pays your tuition? Sounds good to me!
