College is important for young people today for a couple of reasons. The first is progressing times; thirty years ago a high school diploma was all the everyday person needed for a good job, but as times have progressed if one expects to make a decent living, a college diploma is almost a must. Not only does a college diploma open a lot of doors for one as far as careers go, but college acts as a time to grow and make lifetime friends as well. College is important for young people today because it gives them a chance to experience life on their own before jumping into a career and family. It is a time to meet new people and try new things, while gaining knowledge that will prepare you for the career you wish to pursue in the future. I’m 36 years old and I want my degree so I can make this world a better place. If I would have started younger, I could have effected greater change with all the time I was given. College isn’t just about get a degree, you find yourself and having that degree you can make difference in the world in the way you’re most passionate about. The sooner you can find that out the better.
A college degree opens a variety of opportunities in the working force, giving students a better chance for success. Senator John Kerry said in a 2004 presidential debate that, “Our college students represent only 20 percent of our population, but they are 100 percent of our future. They are our greatest investment, and we must help them understand the importance of investing in their selves.” The world is changing rapidly, and many jobs rely on new technology and more jobs require education beyond high school.
