Nurse Anesthetist Questions?
Rich asked:
Ok so right now I am in High School, but when I graduate i’ll be a certified LPN after this I’m going to go to school one more year for my RN then im not sure about how many for my CRNA (to be a Nurse Anesthetist) Does anyone know how long after getting my RN will it be to be a Nurse Anesthetist (please do not say anything on getting my bachelors or associates degree I will already have them) and also what is the Starting wage? If I become a Traveling nurse how much more will I make? more than working at one hospital? Will i be able to have enough money to be well off? (I’m … quite poor.) Thanks Everyone!

i really dont know… but i think you have to get a job first at the hospital to earn money. being a nurse is really a great job. You’ll have your degree a little later and it’ll get you more job opportunities and higher salary. dont rush. you’ll have plenty when you find a good job.

You are asking how long it will take from obtaining your RN after an LPN to RN transition program I am assuming. It will of course depend on the college credits you did not want to discuss. You seem to have some confusion so I will try to cover this from the basics. After an LPN certification program, generally you will take the LPN to RN associates program. You will not at this point have a bachelors degree in nursing (BSN) you will have the ADN and have passed the NCLEX. Dependent on the university it generally takes at least 2 and possibly 3 years to go from an LPN ot RN program to the BSN. We will say 2 years for the sake of this discussion. After finishing the BSN, if you have been working in a high acuity unit (ICU, CCU for example) you can try for a Masters program in anesthesia. These are all a minimum of 2 years (some possibly more) but lets say for the sake of argument that after you become an RN you will need at least 4 years of education in a university setting to be eligible to sit for the CRNA exam.
As far as salary, you can often do better by finding the best setting in one area than by traveling. Nurse anesthetist can make from $70,000 per year to a national average of over $100,000 per year to over $250,000 per year without traveling. This is of course dependent on the abilities and specialties of the anesthetist. Also, with nurse anesthetist, contrary to most medical professions, the CRNA will often make more money by being in a smaller town or medically underserved area, where they do not have as many physician anesthesiologist to compete with. This is also frequently true for Nurse Practitioners.

Why waste your time with an LPN?
Get your RN right off the bat…then start working on your BSN. You will need to work in a critical care unit for 1 to 2 years before you can apply to CRNA school, and then it’s approx 3 years after that.
CRNA’s make on average, $150K a year.
