Travel nurse in need of personal property insurance to cover my macbook pro – any suggestions?
Tri asked:
Does anyone know of any insurance carriers that offer personal property insurance covering laptops. I already checked with Apple and they do not offer it. Thanks in advance.

I work at State Farm and we offer a personal articles policy. All you need is a bill of sale/estimate/appraisal & pictures and it is very inexpensive to insure. I have insured $17,000 diamond rings for $130 a year, so of course it would be cheaper for a couple thousand dollar laptop. It’s an all-risk policy so you’ll get the money back no matter what happens. And you can have a $0 deductible. You might also want to check and see what your homeowner’s insurance covers. it might cover the value of the laptop in your personal property coverage.

If you use this mac for work, entering data and such, then a PERSONAL policy isn’t going to cover a BUSINESS use laptop. What you need is “inland marine” coverage, and you can see if your employer will add the coverage to their property policy. If you are looking for stand alone coverage, the premium STARTS at $500 a year. That’s just how much it costs to issue the policy.

I know that it is a nice computer, but usually, it’s not worth purchasing insurance for something of that value.
Most likely, you’ll pay more in insurance premium than what you’d bargained for.
Typical approach to insurance is to retain property losses of this magnitude (meaning purchase no insurance or “self insure”). That is why you are not observing an abundant market for what you are asking for.
Property insurance is more applicable to vehicles, homes (property), or items on par with the values of vehicles / homes (i.e. jewelry, works of art, etc.)
Just take good care of it
