A CNA or Certified Nursing Assistant has a lot of duties. Majority of these duties are assisting in the basic needs of a resident. But why is it important that these duties be done? Why are they assigned to a CNA?

A CNA or certified nursing assistant is a person who has undertaken training and has passed the certification exam. They work under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. Nursing assistants are necessary for the total care rendered by nurses. Their duties are assigned to them so that nurses could concentrate on the work that only they are eligible to do such as administering medications, creating care plans, and the like. So as to give ample time to nurses to focus on these tasks, their other duties are delegated to nursing assistants.

Some of the CNA duties are answering patient call signals or lights; turning and helping the patient ambulate; bathing, clothing, and feeding the patient; and cleaning the room. The immediate answering of the patient call lights indicates the efficiency of the care rendered to the patient. It is usually seen as a shortcoming when a patient waits for a long time before his needs are met. When answering the patient call lights, the nursing assistant is also able to check up the patients’ status briefly and is able to give timely reports of any changes to the charge nurse. Turning and helping the patient ambulate prevents injuries to the patient; the former prevents bedsores, which is a common cause of pain to bed-ridden patients, while the latter, in turn, prevents fall injuries such as contusions and fractures. Bathing, clothing, and feeding the patient oversee the basic needs as well as the overall wellness of the person. Cleaning the room, including changing the linens, helps in keeping it organized and ensures a good resting place for the patient.

There are many other duties that a CNA is designated to perform and each has a reason why it is necessary to make sure it is done properly. A good CNA needs to have a good understanding of all of these to be able to go through work with a smile in their face.
